It must be a slow news week or adoptive parents gave CNN such good ratings this week that Paula Zahn once again decided to do another show on China and the Adoption Restrictions. This segment was on last night, Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007 and was entitled, "She’s a proud parent now, but if she wanted to do it again, she couldn’t. Will strict overseas adoption standards rule you out too?"
Okay, yes the new restrictions from China have affected a lot of people who may want to adopt in the future, but the way I see it, a country can dictate what requirements it feels is best to adopt the youngest members of its society. We have rules here in the US for who can adopt and who can not, but she isn't talking about that. You tell me how many birthmothers here in the US would chose a perspective parent for their child that was single, or over 50, or a had a low networth, or who was extremely obese...remember when birthmothers look through the books of potential parents the first thing she sees is a picture. I just don't feel that the new regulations deserve the amount of criticism they are getting. Of course, this is because they don't effect me. I am sure I would feel completely different if this wasn't the case.
The other point of interest is that these new rules from China says that people right now need to be within these guidelines to be given "priority" to adopt from China. In the future, if the ratio to children needing adopted increases and parent applications decrease, I could see the easing some of these restrictions. Maybe not all of them, but could see them allowing singles to adopt once more.
Who really knows what the future holds for adoption in China?? We American's sure don't or we would be able to understand why this slowdown in happening in the first place!!!!!!
